Soulful keys laden with a sense of yearning punctuate the raw house vibe, whilst Khalil’s vocal floats across it all as whispers, perfectly complimenting the mood and groove.

Thatmanmonkz has teamed up with Chicago native Khalil Anthony to rework two of the tracks from his fantastic album ‘Train’, as fledgling label ShadeleafMusic follow up their superb debut release with another EP packed with yet  more musical marvelousness.

First up is ‘Needed You’, an absolutely joyous slab of raw house. ‘Monkz takes the heart-meltingly beautiful vocals from Anthony and marries them in triumphant union to a bass line that will make your hips wiggle provocatively, whether you knew they could or not, and a blues sample that will leave Kenny Dixon Jr desperate for a dig in his crates. This is primed to enchant any dancefloor lucky enough to be graced by its presence. The dub version sees ‘Monkz strip things back and ramp up the bass, giving the track an altogether dirtier feel to it; we love it!

The opening bongo riff in ‘Shelter’ instantly lays down the funk and doesn’t let go of it until the very final beat. Another bass line that instantly puts out the invitation for a bit of bump and grind slinks out the speakers, whilst a cascade of chimes swirls around the track. Soulful keys laden with a sense of yearning punctuate the raw house vibe, whilst Khalil’s vocal floats across it all as whispers, perfectly complimenting the mood and groove. Khalil’s vocal is used fleetingly in the dub, but still packs the punch we’re by now becoming accustomed to, whilst Monkz once again peels back some of the layers from the original to create a nailed-on basement banger.
